Water scarcity remains a challenge within municipality resulting from among others’ water losses through leaks, reduced reservoir levels, and prolonged droughts among others. It became evident from engagements between RWF and Metsimaholo Local Municipality that Mooidraai community within the municipality were still experiencing water shortage related challenges relying on water tankers, and river streams (that are often polluted). It is as a result of these engagements that the Foundation saw a need to intervene in the plight of the Mooidraai community through water supply solutions. Key to the challenges faced by the Mooidraai community is lack of centralised water reticulation system and reduced water availability for households use. Prior to the RWF’s intervention, the community has been dependent on rivers streams and water tankers for water supply. Since Rand Water Foundation’s intervention, the community enjoys maximised access to clean and safe to drink water. Rand Water Foundation has drilled and equipped ten (10) boreholes with 20×10 000l storage tanks, solar powered energy generation, magnificent stand tanks, razor wired fencing, sixteen (16) extended communal taps and most significantly, water purification units to ensure that water is clean and safer for drinking. The project created a total number of forty (40) jobs for local community members, further supporting four (04) Non-Governmental Organisations and two (02) SMMEs through service delivery partnership. In appreciating this investment by Rand Water in Mooidraai, the community represented by Ms. Motloung said “previously we used to fetch water in the river streams and in most instances, drinking with animals in these streams, and now that has come to an end. We appreciate purified water supply resulting from Rand Water Foundation intervention. Moreover, we appreciate employment opportunities that came with the project”.
